Why does COVID-19 cause hair loss and what to do about it?

Many people start to lose their hair after a COVID-19 coronavirus infection. Why does it happen and what to do about it? Tatiana Yegorova, dermatologist and trichologist, shared her opinion about it.

According to News.ru, hair loss can be caused by a lack of iron or high cortisol levels in the body, as well as by a coronavirus infection. According to experts, it is impossible to reverse the process of hair loss, and both women and men can be affected.

According to Yegorova, COVID-19 disrupts nutrition of the hair follicle and blood vessels, which leads to hair loss.

“The only thing that can be done is to speed up the process of hair growth. Mesotherapy and vitamin therapy are done,” noted the trichologist.

Treatment for this problem depends on the type of loss, she said. Most often there is diffuse loss, which can last from 100 to 120 days.

The specialist added that the virus also negatively affects the skin, and to treat it the patient needs to restore its water balance and barrier functions, as well as not to neglect care to accelerate regenerative processes and cell renewal. Glutathione, vitamin C, carnosine and antioxidant complexes are used for this purpose.
